grandmas sweet pickles
- 2 cups coarse salt
- 1 gallon fresh water
- 2 gallons sliced cucumbers
- 2 oz powdered alum
- 1/2 gallon white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp tumeric
- 5 lbs sugar
- Dissolve salt in water.
- Put cucumbers in salt water and soak for 7 days.
- Wash cucumbers in cold water, then cover with fresh water plus powdered alum.
- Drain well, return to crock.
- Add vinegar and tumeric.
- Let stand 24 hrs.
- Drain off vinegar and return cucumber to crock.
- Layer sugar and cucumbers and small amount of pickling spice.
- After a few days, stir cucumber well to make sure all sugar is dissolved. Do not cook or seal
- Pickles will keep for up to 1 year.
