Found this recipe in my mom's old cookbook from the Army Wives Club Cookbook - Class of 77. It was her contribution to the book.
- 1 package yeast
- 2 tablespoons lukewarm water
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 c shortening
- 1 c buttermilk
- 5 to 5 1/2 c flour
- Preheat oven to 400.
- Dissolve yeast in water.
- Sift dry ingredients together.
- Cut in shortening.
- Add yeast and buttermilk to dry mixture.
- Knead enough to hold together.
- Roll dough to 1/2 - 3/4 inch thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter.
- Bake for 20 minutes. Makes 28 biscuits.
Can be frozen before baking. If so, place frozen dough on cookie sheet and increase baking time by 5 - 10 minutes.
